The movie “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend”, from the executive producers Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment (ILBE), the parent company of Iervolino Studios (IES), won over American audiences just four days after its premiere – as the second most watched movie on Apple TV in the drama genre and the fourth most watched movie across the entire platform.

Part of the movie‘s visual effects (VFX) was done at Iervolino Studios, under the supervision of Peter Nalli, Head of animation and visual effects at ILBE.

This biographical drama by the director and screenwriter Bobby Moresco is based on the life of the famous entrepreneur, Ferruccio Lamborghini, from the founding of his tractor factory to the design and production of the legendary Lamborghini luxury sports cars.

“The excellent results this film has achieved right after the premiere, confirm that the international audience appreciates and wants to know more about successful and unusual Made in Italy stories, which will show and prove to today’s young people that passion and persistence can turn any dream into reality”, said Andrea Iervolino, CEO and co-founder of ILBE and IES, and added that this movie is also an ideal example of successful cooperation between Italy and Serbia, for which he especially thanks the Government and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, which have been supporting this project from the beginning.

Just two days after the world premiere in Rome, the movie “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” was exclusively presented to the Belgrade audience, at the official opening of the Italian-Serbian Film Festival at the Yugoslav Cinematheque, and it has been distributed in the USA since November 18. The local audience will have the opportunity to enjoy this achievement and see for themselves the work of local artists from December 8, when the film will be screened in cinemas throughout Serbia, distributed by Blitz Film.

Frank Grillo, Mira Sorvino, Gabriel Byrne, Hanna van der Westhuizen, as well as the young actor Romano Reggiani, play the main roles in this biographical movie about the legendary entrepreneur and visionary Ferruccio Lamborghini. “ILLUSTRATION IN FILM” EXHIBITION AT SKC, BELGRADE

In the Great Hall of the Student’s Cultural Center (SKC) in Belgrade last Thursday, a panel discussion on “Illustration in Film” was held, as part of a wider project and exhibition of the same name by art historian Marija Ristić

.

For the third year in a row, Iervolino Studios supports another tremendous exhibition by Marija Ristić and participates in it with the works of #IES artists from the series “Puffins Impossible” – illustrations, storyboards, 2D animatics, character and object designs. The goal of this instructive and educational project is to show the diverse representation of illustration in the fields of fiction, animation and advertising film, and to encourage a theoretical understanding of illustration within contemporary art.

“Illustration as a profession arose in the 19th and 20th centuries, in the form of drawings, corresponding to the printed text it would stand next to. At the end of the last century, it significantly expanded its field of activity. With the rapid development of digital technology, illustration has taken a prominent place as a visual transmitter of narrative, which no longer takes the form of a printed text, but of a film or digital “canvas”. Today, an illustrator is an artist who creates two-dimensional images for various companies and industries – film, television, commercials, pre-production, various types of advertising…” explained the author of the project, Marija Ristić.

Besides Marija Ristić, artists Biljana Sovilj, Borivoje Grbić, Branislav Cimeša, talked about various projects in the field of audio-visual arts, while representatives of Iervolino Studios – Peter Nalli, Head of Animation and VFX at ILBE Group, and Dragutin Vukelić, 2D Lead Storyboard Artist at Iervolino Studios, focused more on illustration in animated form. “Former Yugoslavia is characterized by an exceptional artistic heritage and narrative culture, which are of great importance for the development of animation and local artists, among whom illustrators definitely stand out. At Iervolino Studios, we truly value artists based on their ability to tell exceptional stories for audiences around the world,” said Peter Nalli.

Dragutin Vukelić spoke about the role of a storyboard artist and the importance of the storyboard as the basis which carries the episode of an animated series, stressing the importance of constant learning, in step with the development of methodology and work technology in this industry.

The “Illustration in Film” exhibition is a continuation of the “Theory of Illustration” project, which aims to establish research methods in the field of illustration. In 2020, we participated in a panel discussion organized at SKC within the exhibition “Art of Storyboard – the place where film and comics meet” and the panel “From Illustration to Storyboard”, as part of the “GETO: Handicraft above Everything” exhibition, at the Museum of Applied Arts in 2021. By participating in these programs, creative experts from IES provide a more detailed insight into contemporary work practices in the creation of animated content.

The exhibition will be open to the public until November 14 in the Happy Gallery of SKC. It features representative works by artists of different artistic styles – Biljana Sovilj, Stevan Aleksić, Siniša Banović, Aleksa Gajić, Borivoje Grbić, Dragomir Nikolić, Branislav Cimeša, Ivan Šainović, Zoran L. Pantelić and the incredibly talented artists from our studio – Siniša Lazić, Dragutin Vukelić, Ilija Ivković, Nevena Silaška, Anđela Živković, Uglješa Radišić, Teodor Ajduk and Miloš Živkov.

Numerous tech giants and pioneers, business experts and innovators were among the conference speakers, sharing unforgettable stories, with our very own Peter Nalli, Head of Animation and VFX at ILBE & IES, among the opening speakers at the conference.

“Far From Home: Connecting People and Places to Produce Animation”

His presentation, called “Far from home: connecting people and places to produce animation”, took place on October 28th, on the occasion of the International Day of Animation. Peter used this opportunity to introduce himself, his work, and our studio to the incredible and enthusiastic audience in Niš

He talked about his experience in the field of animation and the role and evolution of visual effects in culture, technology, and innovation, as well as the connection between these fields, which is what Iervolino Studios strives to contribute to in Serbia.

“MAKING MOVIES IS HARD. MAKING ANIMATED MOVIES IS EVEN HARDER!”

He introduced the audience to the “Puffins Impossible“ animated series which was created at IES, the idea behind it, and the movement that our studio is bringing about in the animation landscape in Serbia, as the largest creative animation studio in the region.

“CULTURALLY SPECIFIC, UNIVERSALLY HUMAN.“

Peter’s presentation illustrated the avant-garde, future-focused vision of our studio in the field of animation and film industry, and through a lively and fun Q&A he engaged and shared useful ideas and thoughts with the audience.

HAPPY WORLD ANIMATION DAY!

Animation as the fulfillment of primordial desires for other worlds

When in 1832 the Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau invented the phenakistoscope to prove his thesis about the persistence of vision, i.e. the illusion of movement created by rapidly changing static scenes, few could have guessed how much he had changed our world forever. It was an early device for animating images, which was a popular toy in the 19th century, and later served as an inspiration to the pioneers of film technology. Animation, that is, the “revival” of images, has come a long way since then – from comic drawings that move, through beloved classic cartoons to animated characters that are hard to distinguish from real actors.

It would be interesting to make a comparison between painting and photography, or theater and film, and the initial favoring of the more modern and “real”, while in fact both would slowly equalize, with all their advantages and disadvantages. Although originally perceived as content for children and young adults, animation has recently won a well-deserved place in the visual and dramatic arts and has shown that it can deal with serious topics, providing previously unimaginable possibilities of the form.

The global animation market is expected to reach a value of as much as 640 billion US dollars by 2030. We at Iervolino Studios and our parent ILBE Group firmly believe that short content will become the number one product in the entertainment industry, because user behavior, especially on social networks, confirms that people today are most easily committed to the five-minute format, and there is every likelihood that that time will gradually be reduced to 60 seconds. It is particularly interesting that numerous studies and market analyzes show that, if they like the content, users continue to watch and remain engaged on a certain platform for up to three hours. Here we can draw a parallel with literature, that is, poems or short stories. Like the renaissance that poetry is currently undergoing after it has proven ideal for networks, the distribution and access to entertainment content has also transformed the way we progressively move to short digital content. We want to consume them when it suits us, in whatever circumstances, and short forms allow us to do that.

A separate revolution was made by video games, creating a new universe of entertainment. One of the things that always amazes me is the fact that all types of animation still have their audience – from the oldest 2D variants to the latest fully immersive experiences made possible by VR and AI technology. This only proves the truly artistic and timeless nature of “moving drawings”, which can, at least for a short time, fulfill that primordial human need – to exist in another world. Metaverses are a natural continuation of decision-making games in which we create our own destinies (to the extent that the creators allow us to do so). For a privilege once enjoyed only by the sons of the gods, now it is enough to turn on the computer or phone and start the game. We determine everything from the way we look to the personal traits of our characters. And everything is possible, above all being connected. That closeness that we may seem to have lost due to the progress of science and technology, returns big time with the almost limitless possibilities of the metaverse. And it will not stop at video games but will also find its place in animated content for audiences of all ages. To paraphrase a famous song – It’s an awfully big universe and there’s no reason to be alone in it.

And that’s why today, almost two centuries after the phenakistoscope, we celebrate the magic that still turns our dreams into reality and gives us inspiration for new imaginations. Happy World Animation Day from Iervolino Studios, which has been creating outstanding stories for the young and young at heart together with talented artists and creative professionals for two years already!
