1ST ITC COURSE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED – 3D CHARACTER ANIMATION BY DRAGANA MANDIĆ

The first ITC course “3D Character Animation” with Dragana Mandić was successfully completed on Saturday, 30 July, 2022! We’re incredibly proud of what the thirteen students, including three of our IES artists, have managed to achieve. They successfully completed the course, happy and excited by what they learned. Dragana Mandić, the course lecturer, is the Lead Animator at the Steamroller Animation studio in the USA. The course was designed to significantly improve its trainees’ animation knowledge through thematic project(s) which they worked on together for 11 weeks this summer.

The course took place at our studio in Novi Sad and in Belgrade, and for the best course trainees, internships and potential employment at our studio await. The course was primarily intended for people with at least the basic level of knowledge of a 3D software, such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, etc.

TRAINESS AS THE MAIN STARS OF THE COURSE

“This is not a passive course where applicants just repeat what the lecturer says. Here, the students actually chose and created their own original work and project.” Dragana Mandić

Throughout this course, students learned how to create short character animations, they were introduced to acting and performance in animation, and the body mechanics in humans and animals, as well as the anatomy behind it. One of the most important things about this course is the fact that the course trainees created their own authentic work which, week after week, together with Dragana, they analyzed, peer-reviewed, criticized and improved.

Dragana Mandić, the incredibly experienced and successful animator and lecturer of this course, said that she couldn’t be prouder of how far the applicants got and how much they have learned.

“It was a dynamic and intense course but above all an incredible and amazing experience. We talked about the creative technical aspects present in an animator’s work as well as the social aspect – the way animators should accept healthy feedback from their supervisors and how it affects the quality of their work,“ said Dragana.

This is one of the many things that makes the IES Internal Training Center special. As Dragana herself mentioned, even though she’s the one teaching them all these things, the trainees are actually the main stars of the show.

THEY’RE BATMAN – I’M ROBIN

“My main goal is to guide them on the path to becoming successful animators. They’re Batman, I’m Robin. What people receive here in the ITC is knowledge specific to specialized fields which cannot be found anywhere else. The ITC has a great infrastructure, and it was a privilege to watch these students grow and be part of the forming of their career path.”

Character animation is one of the most important things in the creation of an animated film or series. Generally, courses in 3d character animation and creature animation are incredibly popular and valued right now, not just in Serbia, but around the world. That is why this course is such a unique experience.

Mileta, Storyboard Director and ITC Manager, emphasized one of the most important things to remember after a course such as this:

“Keep working. Keep creating. Whatever you do, don’t let yourself forget about all the important tips and tricks you have learned, and stay dedicated to your projects, practice, and the results will follow.”

IES is grateful to everyone who was involved in this thrilling 11-week adventure, from Dragana Mandić, and Mileta Poštić, to the hard-working course participants and members of our team and staff. The IES Internal Training Center will continue to develop and organize new courses and workshops in the upcoming period with the aim of guiding young artists and helping them kick-start their career in animation.

TESTIMONIALS

“I would describe this course as a battle against dragons – such as Autodesk Maya, rigging, and plenty of other animation aspects. But at the end of the day, of course, this was a major breakthrough for all of us and a truly wonderful experience.

The most exciting part of this course? The moment we uploaded our files each Friday to see the improvements not only of our own work but of the whole group.”

  • Teodora Lečić, Course Participant

  •

“I think that the Internal Training Center is one of the best IES projects and I’m honored and grateful to be a part of it. As artists, we should constantly strive to learn new things, grow, and figure out all the ways in which we can better at what we do. That is why I’m really looking forward to future lectures and projects within the ITC.”

CELEBRATION TIME AT IES!  HAPPY 2nd B-DAY

Iervolino Studios celebrates its 2nd birthday! Just 2 years after the founding of our studio, we have managed to achieve something that was difficult to imagine: thanks to the talent, imagination and passion of our team and to the growth and progress of the largest animation studio in the region, the work of Serbian artists and creatives is now reaching millions of people around the world. What was once a dream is now reality.

Our Studio

After just two incredible and successful years, we operate in two cities, Belgrade and Novi Sad. One studio, two locations, measuring over 1,500 square meters. Today, almost 150 artists, talents and experts from Serbia are working on original projects watched by millions around the world in a uniquely designed studio, equipped with the latest technology, a safe virtual environment, with a state-of-the-art production pipeline – enabling us to create great stories for the young and young at heart.

Many exciting memories and occasions were marked within our studio’s walls in these two years – from Johnny Depp’s first visit to IES and the official opening of our Belgrade branch, to the welcoming of new employees and colleagues, as well as the expansion of our offices and departments. We have opened our Internal Training Center, organized numerous internal educations, visited universities and presented our story to students who were eager to learn more about us. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! We were partners of some amazing events, and we never forgot to have fun and celebrate all the good things in life – together

IES Superheroes

We manage to tell these original stories thanks to our incredible artists and creatives, and most importantly, great people we have employed. That is the greatest and most important value of Iervolino Studios. Even though our studio functions from two locations, we are one superhero team. We believe in teamwork, commitment and constantly do our best to help each other grow throughout our IES journey. After a while, we realized that the Serbian creatives possess enormous potential and talent. This led us to easier focus our attention on finding the right people who see IES and the world of animation as their calling, not just as a job, opting for quality instead of quantity.

Learn with IES

In our second year, we officially started learning together by organizing internal educations, workshops and courses given by our colleagues and top local and international experts in our studio who were willing to share their knowledge. Mauriziana Gualdrini, an experienced and well-known Italian storyboard artist, visited Serbia and our studio to teach our team about “Performance in Drawn Animation”. Our incredible IES colleagues were also generous to share their knowledge, skills and wisdom through internal educations. Milisav Banković taught us all about “Animation with Krita”, Teodor Ajduk gave an inspiring lecture on the “Examples & Methodologies of Animation Creation”, and Miloš Živkov, together with Teodor, shared his tricks and tips on “Toon Boom – Harmony-Essentials Software Management”.

IES & Students

Education is key! We were guests at the University of Arts in Belgrade, the Museum of Applied Arts, and the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. Collaboration with the academic community and educational institutions is one of our key missions at IES. In the last few months, we have had the fantastic opportunity to present our story to students in Serbia, explain what Iervolino Studios is and what it means for their future.

There is always room at IES for people to learn, and we already have colleagues who have gone from ‘intern’ to ‘employee’ in our second year. We can’t wait for the next opportunity to talk to the young and young at heart to discuss animation, film, arts, technology, culture and meet our future colleagues who want to create innovative and original stories for audiences around the world.

IES Internal Training Center

We have officially opened our Internal Training Center (ITC) in our second year. The ITC is a training platform for animation professionals of all levels who want to develop new skills, perfect what they already know and possibly kick-start their career in the field of animation, film and VFX at our studio. The ITC came alive in April 2022 with a specialized course on “3D Character Animation“ by Dragana Mandić, Lead Animator at the Steamroller Animation studio in the USA. The course is well underway, lasting 11 weeks in total, designed for people with basic knowledge in 3D character animation. The best participants of the course are to be rewarded with internships or employment opportunities at Iervolino Studios.

People who come to the ITC to level up their skills and knowledge will often work on the same equipment and projects as our IES artists, follow the same pipeline steps, which will directly prepare them for potential work at our studio. We also had a pilot project within our studio which turned internships into jobs for half of the trainees who applied. Fun fact: they were all women! We will continue to organize innovative and intensive workshops, exciting projects, courses and training programs with top local and international experts for everyone eager to come to our studio.

Puffins Impossible

Puffins Impossible, starring Johnny Depp, is the first animated series fully created and produced in Serbia. It was created in Iervolino Studios and produced by our strategic partners Archangel Digital Studios (ADS), owned by Miloš Biković. In our first year, thanks to an amazing collaboration and teamwork with ADS, we successfully created 3 seasons (54 episodes) of Puffins Impossible.

Two years ago, when Andrea Iervolino and Miloš Biković started this fantastic cooperation, there were 30 people working on the realization of this dream. Now, more than 150 people from IES and ADS have come together and done it! Scriptwriters, storyboard artists, modelers, 2d and 3d animators, editors, designers and other artists from our studio together with the directors, sound designers, and compositors from Archangel Digital Studios, share the success that is Puffins Impossible and we can’t wait to continue our partnership.

Our second year was marked by the release of the series’ first season on streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and TaTaTu in more than 100 countries. Millions of people around the world can now see the talent of Serbian artists, creatives and experts in this action-packed family adventure featuring a team of superhero puffins.

Last year, Johnny Depp came to Serbia to promote the series, opened our studio in Belgrade, signed a poster and T-shirt for us, and left a scarf for Johnny Puff – the character he lends his voice to. Puffins Impossible was made in Serbia, for the whole world to enjoy.

Spread the Word

The second year of Iervolino Studios was marked by many exciting events, happy occasions and media appearances. Johnny Depp came to Serbia to promote the Puffins Impossible series, which was followed by a gala ceremony and a press conference. On that occasion, the legendary actor visited and officially opened our studio in Belgrade. We were guests on various TV & radio shows, and the most significant media outlets in Serbia wrote about us, helping us to spread our story! We were also proud partners of this year’s Adria Summit event and the Effie Awards Serbia 2022 gala ceremony. We got to meet some truly incredible people and present our artists’ work, and we’ll continue to spread the word about IES

The Exciting Future of IES

Our incredible team continues to grow. The first animated series created in our studio has seen the light of day, already conquering the hearts of people around the world. As we open a new chapter in our story and enter our third year, we’re excited to welcome new colleagues to our studio. We will continue to organize specialized and intensive courses and workshops within our ITC, and with it, young talents will have the opportunity for an internship and potentially employment at IES.

Our artists continue to create more and more seasons of Puffins Impossible, as well as international live-action movies with animation and VFX coming from our parent company, Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment. We are working on creating authentic stories all united by distinctively local stories, rich in culture and tradition, with universal themes and quality, which everyone can relate to. We continue to promote important values such as equality, inclusion, teamwork, more than half of our employees are women.

We aim to support CSR projects and other projects in the animation industry in order to support the development of animation in Serbia and in the local community. That is why we invite all those who have good ideas and those would love to join us to contact us. We can expect numerous activities for working with young people and students. They will have the opportunity to come to our studio, to apply for internships, and more. We want our studio to grow and it can only grow with people.

IERVOLINO STUDIOS: A NEW & EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTISTS IN SERBIA – PRESENTATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARTS IN BELGRADE

On Thursday, 19 May 2022, the University of Arts in Belgrade hosted a presentation on Iervolino Studios, the largest animation studio in the region, soon to celebrate its second birthday! Mirjana Nikolić, rector of the University of Arts, welcomed Peter Nalli, Head of Animation & VFX at ILBE and IES, Anđelka Janković, Head of Marketing and Communications at IES, and Nikola Purić, Production Director & Senior Animation Picture Editor at IES, and introduced them to 40 students from different departments. Students of animation, game design, graphic design, film and television directing, sound recording and design were just some of the audience gathered to listen to our team.

They listened to the presentation and journey of IES as Peter Nalli, Anđelka Janković and Nikola Purić talked about animation, our work, our plans, and all the possibilities that our studio offers to the University of Arts students and other talented and passionate animation enthusiasts. They also talked about their roles at Iervolino Studios, our history, our training programs and courses within our Internal Training Center (ITC), the path to success in animation and what it means for them personally to be part of the IES community.

Peter Nalli introduced himself to the audience and shared numerous lessons and game-changing experiences which he has gathered throughout his prolific career.

“If you’re surrounded by people who are good at what they do, you only get better.”

As someone who has worked on over 20 international feature films, taught courses at the most prestigious colleges in Canada, and spearheaded the development of animation studios around the world, he encouraged his audience to work hard, be patient, and stay true to themselves. As he said, anything worth doing needs time.

“How do you succeed in this industry? By doing more of the stuff you love and less of the stuff you don’t.”

Anđelka Janković talked about our studio’s inception, our vision, culture, and the values that define us. A couple of years ago, many people would have thought it impossible to create an animation studio of this size in Serbia in the midst of the pandemic. This ‘mission impossible’, has resulted in a fantastic community of talented and passionate individuals, with an Internal Training Center (ITC), specialized training courses and workshops, internships and collaborations, and most notably, resulted in the first animated series to be created and produced in Serbia – “Puffins Impossible”. In less than two years, we have opened two studios in Belgrade and Novi Sad, our IES team has grown from 0 to 100, we have produced 54 episodes of Puffins Impossible with more to come.

“What are the superpowers of the IES team? Community. Equality. Diversity. Teamwork. Passion. Innovation. Support.”

From the fascinating story of our founders and our parent company, Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment, the development of our own IP, a pipeline of the highest order, to the expertise and top-notch technology available at our studio, and services in the field of 2d & 3d animation, CGI, Iervolino Studios keeps growing by the day.

Nikola Purić talked to the students about his perspective and the road he undertook to get to where he is today. Coming from a freelance background, he was astonished and excited by the differences he encountered at our studio.

“You know that feeling of excitement when you’re a kid, not knowing what game you’ll play tomorrow? At Iervolino Studios, I still get to be that kid.”

He introduced the students to the creative process behind the production of an animated movie or series at our studio, the differences between working on live-action and animation and elaborated on his IES role in the grand scheme of things.

“As a freelancer, you’re all alone. Here, at Iervolino Studios, if I have an idea, or need something to be done, I’ll just go into the next office and talk to my colleague about it. Suddenly, everything’s possible.”

Nikola talked about an incredibly important aspect in the animation industry, and the creative industry in general, that people tend to forget as they start focusing on their career. As kids, he said, we’d always be excited to find out what tomorrow will bring. This feeling of joy and excitement, and limitless possibilities, would make us happy because every day was different.

Being part of Iervolino Studios and working together with so many people, who come from different backgrounds, have their unique styles and ideas, all contributing to one team, has made him remember that feeling of wonder.

“There’s always something new going on. We don’t just work on the technical side of things. We CREATE and TELL our own stories.”

The reception of the presentation was truly inspiring. The students were engaged, interested in learning more, asking questions and staying on for additional interviews.

Lastly, here is one of the wonderful student feedback that our IES team received after their presentation:

“This was honestly one of the best present presentations I have ever been to. You have thoroughly presented what it is that you do at your studio and spread so much positivity! My friend Rajko Čučak (2d Storyboard Artist at IES) told me how cool you were, and now, I have seen it for myself!” (Meri Ivanovska Zorić)
